Are you rehearsing your script like a parrot? Rather do it like a pro. Read below to find out more, or book your coaching session with me.
If you are rehearsing your presentation script, you are setting yourself up for failure. While it may be easy to sound like a parrot practicing each word in every sentence, and it may sound great in your mock presentations; the fact is that when you are on stage or at the helm of the boardroom, you will most likely be nervous, and stumble over your words and thoughts, as you attempt to repeat every word verbatim. This technique will leave you lacking passion, but more importantly, as your focus is on recalling each exact word, you will forget the most important element of all – connecting with your audience.
So, how do you prepare for a presentation or public speaking? The secret is in highlighting the key words in your script. The in between words are not important, the thematic words are the placeholders. If you divide your presentation up into themes, you will be setting yourself up to have the freedom to select words you feel comfortable with when presenting, whilst staying on course with your presentation – and most importantly, focusing on your audience.
What do my scripts look like? Sparsely highlighted and broken down into themes. The idea is that when you glance down, you see one or two words which remind you of what messages you would like to get across to your audience. By doing this, your focus is not on your notes, but rather on your audience. Each time you look down and read, you are taking away from the connection you have built with your audience members.
Remember, speeches should be professional at times, but still conversational, still amplifying connection and creating a bond of trust between you and the individuals you are talking to.
